From Idea to Shelf: Why I Didn’t Wait Until I Was "Ready"

For a long time, I have been quietly obsessed with a small local shop tucked into The Forum in Peachtree Corners. Gifts We All Want is one of those places that feels intentional. Thoughtful gifts. Local makers. Items that mean something.
So when I created the Amazing Boxes, a question kept nudging me: what if these boxes lived somewhere beyond my workshops and website? What if they sat on a real shelf, in a real store people already love?
BUT...I also had no idea how retail worked. None. I was (am) brand new to product creation, brand new to this world, and very aware of everything I did not know (and still don't!).
So I waited until the boxes were "real": assembled and in my hands.

Then one quiet January day, I put a box in a bag and walked into the shop. I told Margie, the owner, the truth: "I shop here often. I live nearby. I created a gift out of something I use with my clients and decided to turn it into something others could give. I have no idea how this works. I’m brand new to retail. I don’t really know what I’m doing. But I thought this might be a good fit, and I wanted to ask if you would ever consider carrying a box or two.”
My hands were shaking as I pulled the box out. Visibly shaking.
She looked it over. Asked questions. Smiled. Laughed kindly at my very obvious nerves. And then she said yes. She told me she would be happy to stock a few. We talked through the logistics. Some simple business details. And that was that.
I walked out of the store stunned. I had gone in fully prepared for a no, heart wide open, knowing rejection was a very real possibility. Instead, someone took a chance on me. I texted my family and a few friends the photo below and SHE SAID YES! (Which still makes me laugh, thinking how similar it might sound to an engagement announcement!)

A week later, after a very Atlanta "snow delay", she called to say the boxes were going on the floor.
I stopped by the next day to take photos and a short video. Even then, it felt surreal.
A product I created was sitting on a shelf in a store I love. A store I frequent. A store others walk into every day.
That moment still feels surreal.
I am sharing this because there was no script. No perfect timing. No checklist that told me it was safe to move forward. No green button with the word "Ready" blinking, telling me it was time.
No, this was my CliftonStrengths in action. Activator nudging me to move instead of overthinking. Positivity reminding me that even if the answer was no, I would learn something by asking.
If you read my other blog post, you might recall one of my words for 2026 is Fearless. Not fearless as in unafraid, but fearless enough to act with uncertainty. This was one of those moments. I did not wait until I felt "ready". But I did it anyway.
If you are holding an idea, a product, a pitch, or a next step you keep postponing until you feel more confident or more "ready", this is your reminder:
Readiness is rarely the thing that moves us forward. Action is.
Start before you are ready. Let experience teach you. You are capable of more than you think.
